Itinerary

After pick up at your hotel, you are taken to Marina da Gloria, where the boat leaves about 9:30 am.  Starting your boat tour, you will see the Museum of Tomorrow (Museu do Amanha), built by the famous Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.  You cross under the Rio-Niteroi bridge and can see the neighborhood of Santa Teresa, the Santos Dumont airport and the three forts that were built to protect the city (Sao Joao Fort, Lajes Fort and Santa Cruz Fort).  From afar, the big city sounds rather quiet and peaceful and the views of Rio from the sea are just breathtaking.  As you circle back, you will come across the city of Niteroi on the other side of the bridge.  From there you will have one of the best views of Rio de Janeiro.  Take some time for mental snapshots of beautiful Rio and actual snapshots to show it to friends and family.

You will sail on to see the most beautiful landscape of Rio from Guanabara Bay.  It is the largest bay of the world in volume of water, with Governor's island, Fundao and Snakes island.  During the boat ride, you can hit the bar inside the boat to buy caipirinhas and others alcoholic drinks or sodas and water.  Season tropical fruits, such as watermelon and pineapples, are offered for free.

After heading back to the dock, you will drive back through Aterro do Flamengo from where you can see the beautiful Sugar Loaf in all its glory, before arriving at a traditional Barbecue Lunch, all you can eat style.  Brazilian Churrascarias (barbecue places) offer a wide variety of sides and alternative options.  Even vegetarians leave delighted.

After lunch, the tour takes a van to Cosme Velho neighborhood, riding up to Corcovado Mountain through the lush and dense Tijuca rainforest to the towering Christ Redeemer statue, standing guard over the city of Rio.  Looking up at the 38m (125ft) tall statue, you will feel blessed and protected by this beautiful monument of Christ with open arms, now one of the new Seven Wonders of the World!  From up there you can see most of the town, all of the south zone and all the way to Niteroi.  It is a unique view that will astound you.  You will have about 40 minutes to get to know all the sides and views of Corcovado and its worldwide-known Christ Statue.

After visiting the Redeemer, you will ride the van to Santa Teresa, a neighborhood where laid-backness and tradition meet.  But it also brings you street art, such as the amazing Selaron Steps.  The beautiful steps done in ceramic by artist Jorge Selaron are one of a kind.  You will have about 10 minutes or so to contemplate them before continuing your tour.

The last main sight visited will be Sugar Loaf Mountain, traveling all the way to the top in two steps by cable car.  The first cable car takes you to Urca Hill, a vantage point 215 meters high with beautiful views of Guanabara Bay and its islands, Flamengo and Botafogo beaches, Santos Dummont Airport, the Rio-Niteroi Bridge, Urca's neighborhood and Corcovado Mountain.  At Urca hill, you will visit the initial German-made cable cars circa 1912 and the second generation, from 1972, made by Italians.

From this stage, a second cable car takes you to the top.  When you get there, you will understand why Rio is considered one of the most beautiful destinations in the world.  At 395 meters, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Copacabana beach, several beaches of Niteroi and the Santa Cruz fortress which, during colonial times and the Brazilian Empire, was the main defensive structure of Guanabara Bay and the Port of Rio de Janeiro.  Explore Urca and Sugar Loaf for about 45 minutes, catching great views, the native rainforest and taking great photos.  Then, as the sun starts to set, prepare to be mesmerized by the different shades of orange, red and pink as the sun sets behind the mountains.
